Do you wake up with a tight jaw or even a sore mouth? Do you find yourself with crazy headaches and a lack of restful sleep? What if I told you that you may be grinding your teeth while you sleep? As strange as it may seem, it affects many people. What can cause teeth grinding is stress, anxiety, smoking, and more. Today, I would like to look at what can cause teeth grinding and what can alleviate some of the pain behind it.
Teeth Grinding 101
What is teeth grinding? Teeth grinding, medically known as bruxism, is the clenching of the jaw or chittering. It can be a reactionary twitch you do when you experience something just outside your comfort zone or something completely unknown to you. Some common causes of teeth grinding can be stress-related. If you find yourself in high-stress situations, you may wake up with less restful sleep or, worse, a sore jaw. If you constantly smoke or drink, you may be contributing to bruxism. Is there a cure for this condition? Many doctors believe that grinding your teeth isn’t necessarily cured with basic medications. They see it as a manageable problem. So, if you experience teeth grinding, you won’t get fixed overnight!
How To Handle Teeth Grinding
The main thing that can help mitigate pain from teeth grinding is medication. The medications will help alleviate the pain caused by grinding. Some doctors may even prescribe muscle relaxers to mitigate the grinding risk. Some people have even taken to receiving Botox injections to help reduce pain. Botox injections for treating bruxism aren’t an official way to deal with this issue. Yet, a number of people have claimed they have experienced relief from it. Another approach patients can try is rest and relaxation. Try to calm your mind and change some of your habits to reduce bruxism. Take up yoga to calm yourself and be in tune with your body and spirit. Yoga does reduce stress, so don’t knock it until you try it!
The Road Ahead
Living with bruxism doesn’t have to be a death sentence. All we have to do with all adversity is learn to cope. We must play with the hand dealt to us and take it in stride. What we can do in these situations is ask your partner to assist in monitoring your sleep patterns to see if your tooth grinding is something to be concerned about. One tiktoker has claimed that placing a piece of tape across their mouth while they slept has cured their grinding. When desperate, people are the most innovative. Consult with your healthcare provider if you experience pain regarding bruxism. Try to reduce your smoking and alcohol consumption to help yourself not only with grinding your teeth but also with your overall health.
If you experience terrible pain due to bruxism, what methods have you tried to help the pain? Has anyone found the solution that millions are looking for, just like TikToker claims? We may never know. What we do know is that bruxism is a terrible thing to experience, so please seek medical advice from a healthcare professional.
