Is there a link between COVID Vaccines and heart inflammation? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s deputy director for immunization safety Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, this may be the case. According to Shimabukuro, 226 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis have been confirmed in people younger than 30 post-vaccination. While further investigation is needed, the number seems to be abnormally high.
According to NBC, teenagers and those in their early 20’s accounted for over 50 percent of myocarditis cases reported to the CDC, although that age group is a small percentage of those who are vaccinated. Myocarditis is defined as inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall, usually caused by a viral infection. Severe cases can weaken the heart and lead to dangerous health outcomes such as heart failure, abnormal heartbeat, shortness of breath, and in the most severe cases, sudden death. The disease is treated with anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. The recommendation for children with myocarditis is to follow up with a doctor for approximately six months to ensure no significant issues arise from the disease.
While there is no confirmed link between the vaccine and myocarditis, the abnormal number of young people who have contracted the disease post-vaccine is something that the CDC and other health organizations are going to want to examine further before making any definitive statements. As of right now in Texas, 46.6 percent of the population has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine, while 38.7 percent of the population is considered fully vaccinated. Fully vaccinated is defined by the CDC as being 14 days past receiving the second dose of Moderna or Pfizer, or the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine.
Despite the “imbalance,” as Shimabukuro put it, the overwhelming sentiment is that it is still perfectly safe to receive the vaccine for all those aged 12 and over. The CDC has been pushing everyone to get vaccinated for the better part of six months in effort to fully open America. If something were to change and the link between the vaccines and myocarditis became a legitimate issue, they would have to drastically change direction.
