Odds You Die This Year
An average of 55.3 million people dies each year. That is roughly .007% of the population. Over 150 thousand people die each day. Their causes of death are too numerous to count. Over half of the annual death count is due to the top ten reasons for death. We will be discussing the top three killers which are, in order, heart disease, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The odds you die this year is less than 1% unless you fall in the top 3categories of death.
Heart disease generally refers to the blocked blood vessels that lead to and from the heart. They become blocked up or dysfunctional because of diabetes, obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, etc. The list goes on. The point is that if you are not active or eat poorly, your risk of dying from a heart attack shoots up dramatically. Heart disease kills almost 10 million people annually.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is limited, interrupted, or reduced. With no nutrients, the brain cells begin to die. This blood flow reduction is generally caused by a blood clot and is correlated with smoking. A stroke strikes fast and kills an average of nearly six million people annually.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. People with this disease are at an increased risk of developing lung cancer. The main cause of this disease is tobacco smoking and over-exposure to cooking or burning smoke. When the air travels down the windpipe and into the lungs, a tree-like system with little sacks as leaves catches and holds the air. COPD causes these air sacks to lose their elasticity and leaves air trapped in the lungs, making breathing more difficult. Over 3 million people are killed by this disease annually.
