Your Work-Life Balance

work-life balance

Balancing work and home life is a tough situation that a lot of working adults go through. It can be especially hard when it is a very demanding job that requires a lot of attention outside of normal work hours. This can cause trouble distinguishing between personal and professional time. There are a few things you can implement that will help your work-life balance.

Determine your balance. The first thing you want to do is figure out what work-life balance looks like for you. Everyone has different limits and what is appropriate for a parent of three kids might not be the same for a single, freshly graduated employee. Determining what you can handle will be a lifesaver in managing personal and professional life.

Set limits. Understanding your boundaries will help with balancing work and home life. You can put everything on your terms. After a certain point in time, you can choose not to take any more phone calls or meetings regarding work. Let your voicemail speak for you and share when you will be able to return their messages.

Self-care. Work and home are quite important aspects to focus on, but they should not be the only ones. To give both work and home the mental capacity required; you need to be able to take time for yourself. Give yourself a few minutes every day to disconnect from family, work, social media, etc., and do any activity that allows you to decompress.

Evaluate. Most working adults can have a hard time determining what is truly an emergency and they take time from anything they are doing to deal with the issue. Understanding that some things are not urgent and can be dealt with at a later time will help keep personal and professional life separate.

Commit. Implementing these practices into your life will result in a better work-life balance, but it only works if you can commit. Let someone know what you are trying to do and allow them to keep you accountable.
